The Group CEO of Wings Capital Management on why the biggest obstacle to good projects is rarely the idea itself
Nipuna Wahalathanthrige has spent more than two decades moving between worlds most people only experience one side of, government and private enterprise, financial structuring and project execution, Sri Lankan public institutions and international development assignments stretching from Iraq to Afghanistan. As Group CEO and Managing Director of Wings Capital Management Consultancies, he now brings that entire range of experience to a single question that has shaped his career from the start.
“How can financial knowledge, international relationships and strategic management be converted into practical economic and social value?” he asks.
A Career Built Across Sectors, Not Within One
Nipuna’s academic background spans a Master of Science in International Business from the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom, postgraduate studies from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and a first degree from the University of Peradeniya, as well as additional professional studies in journalism and financial crime and compliance. That multidisciplinary background is directly reflected in the way his career has unfolded.
He has worked as a financial consultant and investment banking adviser on government and semi-government projects in Sri Lanka, supporting financial models, investment structures, and project funding strategies. Internationally, he served as a UNESCAP project management consultant on Korean-supported projects in Iraq, including Basrah, and in Afghanistan across Panjshir, Parwan, and Kapisa, assignments that exposed him firsthand to the discipline required for project governance, stakeholder management, and financial accountability in complex environments.
His public service résumé is equally wide-ranging, including roles as National Advisor to the Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs, National Advisor to the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme, and Director positions at both the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) and the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC).
“These experiences strengthened my understanding of public-sector governance, media institutions, organizational management, and the responsibilities associated with serving national institutions,” he says.
Why He Built a Platform Instead of Taking Another Position
Nipuna’s motivation for founding Wings Capital Management came from a pattern he observed repeatedly across his career: promising projects rarely fail because the underlying idea is weak.
“They often struggle because the project lacks an appropriate financial structure, credible implementation strategy at the correct timing, institutional coordination, or access to the right international partners,” he says.
Having worked across government, financial institutions, corporate management, and investment consulting, he found himself understanding projects from nearly every possible vantage point, investor, government, sponsor, and implementation partner alike. That range became the reason for Wings Capital’s existence.
“The objective is not simply to identify investment opportunities,” he says, “but to help transform them into bankable, sustainable, and implementable projects.”
He is particularly drawn to sectors where conventional approaches are being challenged by new technology, including electric aviation, Advanced Air Mobility, drone logistics, and healthcare technology.
What Wings Capital Actually Does
Wings Capital Management Consultancies operates as a strategic management and investment advisory platform connecting international capital, technology providers, project developers, and public-sector stakeholders, spanning offices in both the UAE and Sri Lanka.
What distinguishes the firm’s approach, Nipuna says, is a refusal to stop at recommendations. “We aim to participate in the complete value chain of a project, from concept development and feasibility through financial structuring, investor engagement, strategic partnerships, and implementation support.”
The firm’s international orientation runs particularly deep in its aviation and Advanced Air Mobility work, exploring how electric aircraft, eVTOL and eCTOL platforms, drone logistics, and vertiport infrastructure could integrate into future transportation ecosystems. Wings Capital also pursues financing structures beyond conventional lending, including project finance, leasing, investment partnerships, and public-private partnerships suited to the realities of emerging markets.
“Our ultimate objective,” he says, “is to become a trusted bridge between international investment capacity and high-impact development opportunities.”
Milestones Rooted in Service
Nipuna traces some of his earliest leadership foundations back to Scouting and cadet training during his school years, experiences that earned him the Presidential Scout Award and instilled a discipline he carried directly into his professional life.
Professionally, he counts his work as a financial and investment advisor to government projects, his international assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his director-level roles at Sri Lanka’s national broadcasting institutions among his most meaningful milestones. He has also received several national distinctions in Sri Lanka, including Deshabandhu, Lanka Puthra, and Vishwa Abhimani, honors he sees less as personal recognition and more as reflections of responsibility.
“I regard these recognitions not simply as personal honours,” he says, “but as a reflection of the responsibility that comes with contributing to society and serving with integrity.”
Today, he also serves as an All-Island Justice of the Peace in Sri Lanka, a statutory appointment recognizing public trust and community leadership.
Still, when asked to name his greatest achievement, Nipuna points not to any single title. “Enduring achievement is not measured by static milestones, hierarchical titles, or isolated transactions. Rather, it is found in the continuous compounding of experiential capital. My greatest legacy lies in navigating the complex intersections of public policy, global finance, and strategic governance. By cultivating reputational equity and trust across international markets, I have been able to leverage this diversified portfolio of knowledge to architect optimal value-creation opportunities for others, this is the true measure of strategic success.”
What Complexity Taught Him About Leadership
Working across governments, international investors, financial institutions, and technology partners with different objectives and cultural expectations taught Nipuna that leadership is rarely about having every answer.
“True leadership is the ability to navigate uncertainty, understand complexity, identify the issues that matter most, make sound and timely decisions, and bring diverse stakeholders together around a common purpose,” he says.
One lesson stands out above the rest for him: financial performance without governance is fragile. “A project may appear financially attractive on paper,” he says, “but without appropriate governance, transparency, risk management, and accountability, that opportunity can quickly become a liability.”
He has also learned to value patience over speed, since major international projects are rarely built quickly, and to stay solutions-oriented as circumstances shift. “Character precedes authority,” he says, “discipline creates consistency, knowledge strengthens judgment, and resilience enables leaders to continue moving forward when the path is uncertain.”
The Principles Behind His Leadership
Nipuna’s leadership rests on six commitments: integrity, strategic thinking, accountability, innovation, long-term value creation, and professional humility.
“Trust is earned through consistency between what we say, what we decide, and what we ultimately do,” he says of integrity. On accountability, he is direct: “It is not about assigning blame, it is about creating ownership and ensuring that lessons are converted into improvement.” And on humility, he is candid about the limits of any single leader. “No leader can possess every answer,” he says. “The responsibility of a leader is to bring together the right knowledge, the right people, and the right judgment to arrive at the right decision at the right time.”
His Advice to Rising Professionals
Nipuna’s advice to young professionals centers on patience with the process of building real capability. “Build capability before pursuing recognition,” he says. “Titles and positions are temporary, but knowledge, credibility, and relationships compound over an entire career.”
He encourages a broad, cross-disciplinary skill set over narrow specialization, along with genuine international fluency. “Learn how to communicate with people from different cultures,” he says. “Understand how international businesses operate. Develop financial literacy. Learn how to negotiate. Most importantly, learn how to convert an idea into an executable plan.”
His closing advice returns to something less tangible but, in his view, more valuable than any single deal. “Protect your professional reputation,” he says. “Your reputation is an invisible balance sheet. It takes years to build and only moments to damage.”
Where Wings Capital Is Headed
Nipuna’s ambitions for Wings Capital extend across several emerging frontiers at once, from tokenizing and trading project assets on digital platforms to Advanced Air Mobility, Urban Air Mobility training and MRO, telemedicine, and sustainable infrastructure development.
The firm is actively exploring international partnerships involving electric aircraft, eVTOL technology, vertiport and droneport infrastructure, and sustainable aviation ecosystems, alongside new project-financing structures designed to help governments and private sponsors access international capital outside traditional lending models.
His long-term ambition reaches even further. “Our long-term ambition is to establish a strong cross-border platform connecting Gulf capital, Asian development opportunities, European technology, and international financial expertise,” he says. “My goal is to position Wings Capital Management at the center of that transformation, not simply as a consultancy, but as a strategic partner capable of helping projects move from vision to investment and from investment to implementation.”
The Leaders Column Perspective
What sets Nipuna Wahalathanthrige apart is the sheer range of vantage points he has occupied before arriving at Wings Capital, government advisor, international development consultant, broadcast institution director, and now strategic investment leader working across aviation, healthcare, and infrastructure. Few founders can claim to have seen a project’s challenges from as many different chairs around the table.
That range appears to be exactly the point. In a market where good ideas often stall for lack of financial structure or institutional coordination rather than lack of vision, Nipuna has positioned Wings Capital as the connective layer meant to close that gap, one built less around a single sector and more around the discipline of turning possibility into something bankable.
