NEW DELHI, Aug. 20: The India Mauritius Fuel Supply Agreement has been signed between Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the State Trading Corporation of Mauritius, ensuring a stable supply of petroleum products to Mauritius for the next five years.

The agreement is aimed at providing Mauritius with greater certainty over its fuel requirements while strengthening India’s role as a reliable energy partner in the Indian Ocean region.

India and Mauritius Strengthen Energy Cooperation

Alongside the commercial agreement, India and Mauritius also signed a government-to-government Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in the oil and gas sector.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said the partnership would help Mauritius secure long-term fuel supplies and improve energy stability. Reliable petroleum supplies are particularly important for transportation, aviation and maritime activities, which play a significant role in the island nation’s economy.

The India Mauritius Fuel Supply Agreement comes at a time when global energy markets continue to face uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, supply disruptions and fluctuations in fuel prices.

Role of Indian Oil in Mauritius

Indian Oil has been associated with Mauritius’ energy sector for more than two decades. Through Indian Oil Mauritius Limited, the company has supplied petroleum products to the country since 2001.

The latest five-year agreement builds on this long-standing partnership and is expected to provide Mauritius with greater stability in meeting its future petroleum requirements.

It also reflects India’s broader efforts to strengthen energy partnerships with countries across the Indian Ocean region.

India’s Growing Refining Capacity

India has one of the world’s largest refining capacities, with approximately 258 million tonnes of annual capacity. The country is also a major exporter of refined petroleum products.

Indian petroleum products are supplied to several international markets, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, Southeast Asia and Europe.

The Indian government has set a target of increasing the country’s refining capacity to more than 309 million tonnes annually by 2032. The expansion is part of India’s long-term strategy to strengthen its energy infrastructure and meet growing domestic and international demand.

What the Agreement Means for Mauritius

For Mauritius, the agreement provides greater certainty over the availability of petroleum products over the next five years.

A reliable fuel supply is important for the country’s transport sector as well as aviation, shipping and other economic activities. The agreement with Indian Oil is therefore expected to contribute to greater energy security and support continued economic activity.
